What is Perineural Injection Therapy?

Dr. John Lyftogt first discovered this treatment and developed it with great success during his work in sports medicine and studies in neuropathic pain.  Dr. O’Neill trained under Dr. Lyftogt and is proud to offer PIT to her patients.

A sugar solution is injected along the superficial peripheral nerves (just under the skin). As these nerves are treated, it influences the deeper nerve branches and even affect the brain’s perception of pain, in the limbic system.

How does it work?

Initial assessments are performed to complete a history and orthopedic exam of the affected area. Depending on the situation, a screening musculoskeletal ultrasound may be performed. If indicated perineural injection therapy is performed.

The 5% dextrose (sugar solution) that is injected acts as an immediate analgesic — blocking nerve receptor fibers. As these nerves are injected, pain is eliminated and movement improves. The pain gradually returns within 4 hours to 4 days. As the pain returns, the severity is diminished.

Treatments are done typically weekly and can lead to permanent pain relief in 6 - 10 treatments.

Dr. O'Neill has found that, in her practice, combining prolotherapy along with perineural injection therapy gets a more thorough resolution. That way nerves, ligaments and the joint are all addressed. This is especially the case when there is a lot of collateral damage after sustaining a large injury or when the injury has become chronic in nature, having persisted for more than 3 months.
